Week 15 Summary – Final Project

18 Dec

Welcome to Week 15. We finally made it. I personally found this to be the most challenging but most rewarding class. I started this class with knowing basic HTML and no CSS. I finish this class with a very good understanding (still so much more to learn) and with an actual website that I created by myself from start to finish. Not only did I create a website, I created a website for my dad. My dad has done so much for me and I couldn’t be happier to do something for him and his company. Hopefully this can help bring in more business as well. Win-win for him!

Week 13 Summary

We learned about spites. “An image sprite is a collection of images put into a single image.” One of the main reasons to use an image sprite is to reduce the load time on multiple images. Very cool and interesting.

Click here to read a great article I found explaining image sprites.

“Think of CSS Sprites as an extension of that technique. The difference is that instead of just two or three images being combined into one, you can combine an unlimited number of images into one. The origin of the term “sprites” comes from old school computer graphics and the video game industry. The idea was that the computer could fetch a graphic into memory, and then only display parts of that image at a time, which was faster than having to continually fetch new images. The sprite was the big combined graphic. CSS Sprites is pretty much the exact same theory: get the image once, shift it around and only display parts of it, saves the overhead of having to fetch multiple images.” (source)

Website update:

Click the above links to see how the website is coming along. As you can tell with the first one, I am having some difficulty. The second one, is images only. I need to add code for the banner, the main image with the text overlay and the titles on the three feature images.

Week 12 Summary

18 Dec

Based on feedback that I received from my teacher and fellow students, I decided to switch up the layout a little bit. I added three images at the bottom of the page, which will link to different pages. These will be used as features and can be easily changed. It will either feature a current project, a service they would like to promote, or anything else going on at the time. I then put a text box over the building image. This I wasn’t so sure about because it was taking away from the image. The more I thought about it and the different locations I put it in, I really grew to like it. The image is that important. It is just a picture of the office.

Slowly getting there…

Week 11 Summary

18 Dec

As the semester is coming to end, I wanted to go back through and make sure that I had completed everything and shockingly realized that I have not updated my blog since week 10. I really am not sure how I let this one slip, but I am going to give you my weekly updates all in one day. Lucky you, blog reader.

Week 11: We continue to learn more about HTML, CSS, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, etc. all while continuing to build our website. This is probably why I forgot to update my blog. I felt very lost and confused. (Note: I have since found my way) Over the next couple of blog posts you will see the evolution of my website. Looking back, I find it kind of funny and entertaining. I am 100% sure that I am the only one that finds this interesting and humorous since I was the one that had to go from a to b.

This is Exhibit A, Draft 1, etc. Fine, but boring.

Week 10 Summary

6 Nov

This week, I finalized my design document for my website. It really solidified my vision for the website. I am sure I will have lots of changes but I feel like I am heading in the right direction. I will be creating a website for my Dad’s company, which he desperately needs. Having an updated website will increase the number of jobs, be able to showcase services offered, current and past projects and make it easier to grab the attention of potential customers. The whole website will be very photo heavy because I want to showcase what the company has to offer and what it can do. Below, is the storyboard and wireframe that I designed for the website.

Week 8 Summary

26 Oct

After browsing through Vincent Flanders website,, I found myself in complete shock. How can people design these websites and feel like they did a good job!? The color schemes, the fonts, the flashy backgrounds… all wrong. I understand someone creating a boring, plain website and having it be bad but to go the extreme of having a flashing background or a website that has absolutely no white space because it is so cluttered with text and images is beyond me. It must have taken someone a long time and a lot of hard work to make some of these sites look that bad. So on that note, here’s to hopefully never making the website!

Week 7 Summary

Animations. Amazing. I had a little trouble with exporting it in the correct format but I finally figured it out and voila! There really are no words to describe this week’s practice assignments. Instead, you can enjoy the cool animations that I created while I wrap my mind around how simple it actually is to create them.
